Report

Welcome to Term 2

Welcome back to Term 2.  We have started the term in a very positive way, with the progress on our new school seeing the roof go on both new buildings, showing us how close the handover is getting.  We have many wonderful teaching, learning, sporting, cultural, leadership and wellbeing initiatives being planned for our students and staff this term.  Some of our significant events this term includes: ANZAC Day commemoration, the JAECG and SRC leadership induction, zone sporting representation, our Athletics Carnival, Year 7 Camp, our Year 10 into Year 11 Transition events, and Semester 1 reports being completed.

We wish all our students, staff and families a positive and productive term ahead.

Senior Leaders – Parliament Visit

Our School Captains Jessica M. and Luca C. visited the NSW Parliament and Government House on Thursday 20 March.  This civics and citizenship program offers Year 12 student leaders the opportunity to develop their knowledge of our system of government and parliamentary proceedings, learn about the role of the Governor and meet their Member of Parliament.  With Luca’s father, Mr Tim Crakanthorp MP being the Member for Newcastle, our leaders were feeling very special as they toured Parliament and met former Newcastle High School student and NSW Parliamentarian, The Hon. John Graham, MLC as pictured below.  Our Senior Leaders of 2025 echoed the same sentiment we find each year that this day is one of the most rewarding and special events on our annual leadership calendar.

Inaugural Charlie Turner Cup

On Tuesday 1 April we held the inaugural Charlie Turner Cup in partnership with the Turner family, Broadmeadow Magic Soccer Club and the Westpac Helicopter Service.  Magic Park was filled with love and solemn reflections on the short young life of our beautiful Charlie, who lived his life to the fullest.  Many students, staff, family, friends and community attended this event to show our love, care and shared grief with the Turner family.  The Newcastle High School soccer team took out the win on the night, in a well-played game in the spirit of Charlie.  We look forward to making this annual event grow in the memory of Charlie into our future.

Yarn Up

The Nakiliko Aboriginal Education Team held our community Yarn Up on Wednesday 2 April, where we welcomed into the school our parents, carers, students and community for a BBQ and yarn.  The weather threatened to dampen the event; however, we didn’t let it get in the way of a lovely afternoon to meet each other, share students’ Personalised Learning Pathway plans (PLPs) for 2025 and get to know one another.

PLPs are a tool for increasing Aboriginal student engagement in learning at school. They have the potential to support improved learning outcomes and educational aspirations when they are developed in genuine partnership with Aboriginal students, their parents, carers and our teachers.  We hope our PLPs for 2025 are a wonderful support for all students, their families and our school, to support us working together in partnership to achieve every students’ goals.

P&C Meeting

Our Term 2 P&C Meeting and Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held face-to-face on Monday 26 May 5:30-7pm in the school Library.

What is a P&C Association?

A P&C Association is a school-based organisation consisting of parents, teachers and interested citizens.  The Education Act 1990 states that P&C Associations are established to:

● Promote the interest of the school by bringing parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation;

● Assist in providing facilities and equipment for the school and promoting the recreation and welfare of the students at the school;

● Encourage parent and community participation in curriculum and other educational issues in schools;

● Report, when requested by the Minister, on the material requirements of the school and advise on the subject of maintenance of the school, alterations and additions to school facilities and the selection of new sites;

● Assist and co-operate with teaching staff at public functions associated with the school;

● Be responsible for the election of parent representatives to any school council constituted at the school in consultation with the principal of the school; and

● Assist in any other matters in which the Minister may seek the co-operation of the association.

These objects and functions are included in the prescribed and standard constitutions for both incorporated and unincorporated associations.  We look forward to welcoming you into the school for the NHS P&C Term 2 and AGM.
