Event Details 2023
● Academic Assessment Placement Test for SAIL
The Academic Assessment Placement Test has been designed to allow students to demonstrate their abilities across a range of areas, including reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills and writing. The test takes place on Thursday 18 May, 2023 and will be held on site at Newcastle High School. To be eligible to sit the test, students must have completed the EOI and paid the test administration fee to the Newcastle High School office through our online portal. This information can be found on our HPaG webpage.
On the test day, students must bring:
· two 2B pencils, an eraser and a pencil sharpener
· a clear bottle of water to keep under the desk during the test
· any items approved as adjustments for disability, including anaphylaxis kits containing an EpiPen, the Action plan for anaphylaxis and the medication.
· Students who wear glasses and those who require asthma inhalers and spacers, tissues, diabetes equipment, or FM transmitters should bring them to the test.
Students are required to make their own way to and from Newcastle High School. This event will run from 8.30am-12.30pm, parents/carers can pick up and drop off at the front of Newcastle High School.
● Faculty Exhibitions
Parents, Carers and incoming Students have the opportunity to engage with teaching and learning at Newcastle High School, where all faculties will have a stall set up and showcase learning in their faculty. There will be an opportunity to have a guided tour of our campus from our Year 12 leaders. This event will be held from 4.00pm-6.00pm on Monday 8 May.
● Year 6 Taster Lessons
The main purpose of the taster lesson is to give Year 6 students a taste of what they can expect when they start at Newcastle High School. This can help to alleviate any anxieties they may have about the transition, and it can also help to motivate them to work hard and prepare themselves academically for the challenges of secondary school. Primary school staff will be attending the Taster Day which is designed to ensure a smooth transition to high school. Our partner primary schools and parents/carers organise transport to and from Newcastle High School. Please see the key dates dropdown tab above for school-specific date/time.
● Individual Education Plan Meeting
The purpose of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is to provide a personalised plan that outlines specific academic and other goals for a student with disabilities or other learning challenges. The plan is tailored to the individual needs of the student, considering their strengths and areas for development. We develop IEP’s in Term 4 to ensure that teachers have all of the required information from Day 1 of Year 7. Students will be nominated by their primary school for IEP meetings in Term 3. Newcastle High School staff will contact you directly if you have been nominated for support to organise an IEP development meeting during the week of 16 October 2023. More information on Personalised Learning and Support can be found on the DoE Website.
● 7UP! Program
The purpose of the 7UP! program is to help students make a smooth transition from primary school to high school. The transition from primary to secondary school can be a challenging time for many students, as they may face new academic and social challenges, and may need to adjust to a new school environment and new routines.
The 7UP! Program will be delivered by members of the Learning and Support team, including the Head Teacher Wellbeing, Year 7 Advisor and The Learning and Support Teacher. The 7UP! Program can help to alleviate any anxieties or concerns that students may have about the transition. By providing information and guidance about what to expect in high school, students can feel more prepared and confident about the challenges they may face.
Our partner primary schools nominate students who they feel would benefit from the program. Students are required to make their own way to and from Newcastle High School (unless otherwise advised by your primary school) and bring their own food and drink. This event will run from 9.00am-12.00pm, parents can pick up and drop off at the front of Newcastle High School.
● Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Morning Tea
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are invited for a yarn and morning tea to support the transition to high school and build an understanding of the support and opportunities here at Newcastle High School. Students will begin to develop Personalised Learning Pathways with support from the Aboriginal Education Team, partake in team building opportunities with the Clontarf Academy and engage in cultural activities.
Students are required to make their own way to and from Newcastle High School (unless otherwise advised by your primary school) and bring their own food and drink. This event will run from 9.00am-12.00pm on Friday 17 November, parents/carers can pick up and drop off at the front of Newcastle High School.
● Orientation Day
The program is targeted at all Year 6 students enrolling at Newcastle High School, who spend their first day at high school all together in readiness for Day 1. The day is facilitated with Peer Support Leaders and key Newcastle High School staff. There will be a parent/carer zone, providing the opportunity to ask questions and build an understanding of Newcastle High School, purchase uniforms and setup payment plans.
Students are required to make their own way to and from Newcastle High School (unless otherwise advised by your primary school). Whilst lunch is provided, we encourage students to bring their own snacks and drink. This event will run from 9.15am-2.30pm on Tuesday 28 November, parents/carers can pick up and drop off at the front of Newcastle High School.
