NAIDOC Day

Celebrating NAIDOC Day

Newcastle High Celebrates NAIDOC Day with Cultural Ceremonies and Activities

Newcastle High School marked NAIDOC Day this year with a variety of activities despite challenges posed by an ongoing rebuild and limited space. NAIDOC Day is an important occasion for staff and students to celebrate and recognize the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The day commenced with traditional ceremonies led by our Aboriginal Education Officer, Aunty Belinda, who conducted a smoking ceremony. This was followed by a performance on the didgeridoo by Mitchell Proctor and traditional dances by the Muloobinba Dance Group.

In a collaborative effort, students worked with Aboriginal artist Mikaela Cameron to create a mural for Newcastle High School. This artwork, which will be displayed permanently, will join murals from partnership primary schools, symbolizing the commitment to and importance of Aboriginal education within the school community.

During lunchtime, the entire school participated in Aboriginal games organized by Clontarf on the front oval. The event also featured a sausage sizzle fundraiser, raising $177.90, contributing to the efforts of the Aboriginal Education Team.

Students engaged in fun activities and reflected on the theme “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.” This theme honours the enduring strength, vitality and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. With fire symbolizing the connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Thank you to Newcastle High School for celebrating NAIDOC Day 2024 with us.
