Road trauma is the leading cause of accidental death for children and young people in NSW. Children should be closely supervised and educated about the traffic environment as they are our most vulnerable road users. I seek your close support and partnership in educating our students about road safety and traffic vulnerabilities.
Parents, carers and teachers are responsible for modelling safe road user behaviours. At our school, we are surrounded by busy streets, public transport corridors, and a built environment of the inner city. We also have no traffic crossings around the immediate area of our Parkway Avenue site, posing a significant road safety issue that has been repeatedly raised to Council and advocated about by our P&C politically. While we await this situation to improve, please speak to your child/ren about road safety – regularly.
It is important to share road safety information with your children, so they can learn safe behaviours when out and about, near the road and/or travelling to/from school.
We all need to reinforce and practice:
● using safe travel routes
● modelling how to be a safe road user
● following road rules and the road signs
● creating safe environments
● assisting students to become independent travellers.
If your child is riding a bike, skateboard, scooter or motorised vehicle to/from school – they MUST wear a helmet.
