Report: Visual Arts, Music & Drama

Visual Arts

Our senior Visual Art students traveled to Sydney for the day to visit the Art Gallery of NSW and Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). We kicked off the day at the NSW Art Gallery and explored the wide range of exhibitions. A favourite interactive installation was by English artist Martin Creed, where students were able to walk through a room filled from floor to ceiling with yellow balloons.

Recently students attended the Van Gogh Alive Exhibition and were given the unique opportunity to immerse themselves into Van Gogh’s artistry and truly venture into his world. From start to finish, students were surrounded by a vibrant symphony of light, colour, sound and fragrance that they called an ‘unforgettable’ experience.

Over the course of the year, Visual Arts students have produced quality works throughout their units studied. A standout is the Year 10 still life unit where students learnt to paint realistically and produced their own still life painting.

Music

On Wednesday 27 July, senior Newcastle High School Music students attended a music technology and performance workshop at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium. Our students participated in performance workshops in the Harold Lobb Concert Hall, where they received constructive feedback from visiting DET music teachers and university music professors. The students were also treated to music technology workshops including tours of the University recording studio, surround lab and rehearsal spaces.

On Wednesday 24 August, the Year 11 and 12 Music students planned and performed a senior music showcase at Newcastle’s legendary music venue, The Wickham Park Hotel. The students performed to a packed house full of friends, family and staff members. This was the third annual Senior Music showcase at ‘the Wicko’, which allows students to perform at an all-ages event in a professional venue. Our students showcased their hard work and talent, representing Newcastle High School in an exemplary fashion.

Four of our Year 9 students have successfully auditioned for the Bandwidth competition in 2022. This is the first Bandwidth since COVID-19 and we are proud to have another successful entry in the competition. 'Baby Blender' will be in the running for their composition and instrumental categories.

Drama

Senior students have had a wonderful year of learning in Drama. They have attended excursions to Australia’s Got Talent and Senior Drama Workshops to prepare them for the HSC and real world experiences in theater and television. Their HSC showcase evening was a great success and showcased their talents from a year of  hard work and dedication.
