Week 5: Monday 19 – Friday 23 August.

During Week 5, Monday 19 – Friday 23 August, Newcastle High School will be celebrating Book Week. CBCA Book Week has been celebrated across Australia each year since 1945. The week is dedicated towards celebrating literature. This year’s Book Week theme is “Reading is Magic”.

To celebrate Book Week we have a host of activities on offer, and we would love for students to get involved. Link to note emailed home via School Bytes.

Book Week activity happening Monday (August 19)

Mindfulness Monday: Head to NHS Library on Canvas to find an assortment of colouring-in pages, in the Book Week tab. Alternatively, you can pop into the library and find colouring pages there.

Submit your final pictures so we can display them! We are also challenging you to create some book-themed bookmarks—bookmarks can be designed by hand or by using a digital design platform.

Book Week activities happening Tuesday (August 20)

Transfiguration Tuesday: Dress up as your favourite book character! *Please see note (below) regarding dressing up.

*Note: If you have a practical lesson on Tuesday and plan to come dressed up as a book character, you will need to bring appropriate clothes to change into. For PE lessons this includes NHS sport uniform and sports shoes, for other practical lessons (e.g. Food Tech, Science, Industrial Arts) please follow the standard faculty guidelines. All Book Week costumes must be school-appropriate.

Trivia Tuesday: Test your bookish knowledge in our all-round, Kahoot quiz. From Harry Potter to Pride and Prejudice—and everything in between—prepare to be tested! Trivia to kick-off Lunch 1 in the library. Bring a portable device to play. Register your interest in the library anytime week 4. There is a twenty-dollar QBD voucher up for grabs!

Book Week activities happening Wednesday (August 21)

Write-It Wednesday: While heavily debated, some people believe that the origins of the six-word-story date back to Ernest Hemingway. Legend says that at a dinner party, Hemingway accepted a bet from friends—all writers—to write a complete story in just six words. The tale is told that he collected on this bet by writing a six-word story on a napkin. Whether this tale is true or not, we are throwing this minimalist challenge over to you: can you write an original, complete story in just six words? All six-word-stories can be submitted in person or via NHS Library on Canvas, by 3:00 pm Wednesday.

Whodunnit Wednesday: Think you have what it takes to solve a literary mystery? Can you figure out which literary character, literary weapon and in which literary setting a crime took place? Put your problem-solving skills to the test in this Amazing Race meets Cluedo game! Grab two friends and register your interest in the library. Last-minute registrations available Wednesday morning – pop into the library before period 1. Game starts Wednesday Lunch 1, Week 5. First team back to the library with the correct guess wins. More information will be given to registered participants.

Book Week activity happening Thursday (August 22)

Read-a-thon Thursday: On Thursday August 22, we are setting you the ultimate bookish challenge: how many hours of reading can you squeeze into one school day? For each hour of reading you complete, you will earn yourself ONE ticket into the draw to win prizes.  Please register your interest with Mrs Dubois before Thursday.

Book Week activities happening Friday (August 23)

Bake-a-book Friday: Can you bake and decorate a baked good (cupcake, cake or biscuits!) to reflect the theme, character/s or plot of a book? If this challenge sounds right up your alley, then dust off that apron and get those baking mitts ready! Cake can be pre-bought, packet-mix or made from scratch. Get creative with your toppings—you can buy ready-made fondant from your local supermarket. Check NHS Library on Canvas for more information and examples of cakes from previous years. Baked books due to the library before period 1, Friday 23rd August. Pop in during Lunch 1 to vote for your favourite cake

Fan Art Friday: All submissions (bookmarks, fan-art, colouring in, #bookbentos, #booksnaps) will be due, via email or in-person, by 3pm Friday 23rd August.
