Merry Christmas, Write it Right! and Re-Build Update

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our families within the Newcastle learning community.  As Term 4 draws to an end, our Yearly Reports will be published on Sentral and we are celebrating the many, many achievements of our students and the school.  A full report on our Presentation Day held in Week 10 and the Higher School Certificate Class of 2024 results will feature in our first Parkway of Term 1, 2025.

I wish you all a safe, enjoyable, and restful summer break.

Write it Right!

Our Write it Right! (WiR!) Year 8 program is now coming to the end of another successful year. Our community partner who contributes a significant amount of financial support for this program is Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS).  We thank PWCS for their unwavering support of our WiR! Program for the past 2 years and their commitment to support us into 2025.  Without them, this program could not exist.

The goal of WiR! Is to learn on-country, taking this learning the classroom to improve students’ academic writing, in a culturally safe way.  Students visit the Murrook Cultural Centre and significant cultural sites on Worimi land 3 times per term all year, and then have follow up lessons within the fortnight, reflecting on what they have learned on-country.

The activities students engage in and the cultural knowledge gained has ensured that our Write it Right! program is engaging, inspiring and rewarding for Year 8 Aboriginal students.

We look forward to welcoming our new Year 8 Class of 2025 students into the WiR! Program next year.  Thanks to Port Waratah Coal Services for their support of this initiative at NHS.

Re-Build Update

To wrap up the year, we have welcomed the sight of the new school buildings rising out of the ground.  The significant earthworks and site establishment logistics have been a major focus in 2024, and now it is time to watch the school come to life with new structures.  Lift shafts, stair wells and ground floor slabs are in place and the Builder is working very hard to make significant progress on our new school environment.  We are all getting very excited to watch the progress as we welcome in the New Year.
