Star Struck, NAIDOC Week, School Reports and Mobile Phones

Star Struck

Star Struck is a NSW Department of Education annual performing arts event for Newcastle, the Hunter and Central Coast. It is a showcase of dance, drama and music performed by students from Kindergarten to Year 12 from a vast network of NSW public schools.  This year, students from both our Cooks Hill Campus and Support Unit were involved in this amazing event.

Star Struck provides performance and learning opportunities for students in the arts and fosters an appreciation of the performing arts. The program brings together students from very small Primary Schools to large comprehensive High Schools from diverse backgrounds. Students have the opportunity to participate as part of combined dance, drama or choir.

Star Struck is one of the largest performance events presented in the area and, as such, enjoys immense local support from the community, which we are extremely proud to have been a part of in 2022.   A huge thank you to all our parents, carers and staff who supported our students through being ‘star struck’ this year.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. FIND MORE HERE.

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  As these dates fall in the school holidays, Newcastle High School celebrates NAIDOC Week at the end of this term, with cultural activities, traditional food, assemblies and a multitude of cultural learning activities across both our school sites.  Our school has been absolutely thriving with positivity and strong connections amongst students, staff and community through engaging in NAIDOC this year.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country. Details about these events in our local area can be found at the NAIDOC Newcastle Information web pages online.

School Reports

School reports will be uploaded and available to parents on the Newcastle High School Sentral Student and Parent Portal at the end of this term.  Sentral Portal Access - Information HERE

If you experience any difficulty accessing Sentral, please follow the prompts detailed on our website, or contact the Administration Office for assistance.

Mobile Phones

Our consultation process regarding the use of mobile phones at Newcastle High School is coming to conclusion.  All stakeholders of our school community directly affected by the use of mobile phones in our school have been engaged to participate in this consultation, using the driving question: What impact are mobile phones having on learning at NHS?

Staff have collaboratively summarised the data collected from this consultation process and assessed the issues related to our school procedures for the use of these devices in our school.

A summary of our findings and our proposed way forward will be reported to parents, carers and students early in Term 3.
