CHS News

A massive Congratulations to Ashlie Stapleton (Yr 9) for making the Hunter Girls 2021 Cricket Team. Trials were held at the end of November. Games will be played during Term 1 2021. We wish you all the best, Ashlie.

City Zone Gala Days

With the slow-ease of COVID restrictions, November provided some relief for students to participate in City Zone Gala days.

Year 7 boys and girls were challenged in Soccer at Merewether High School, playing against Kotara, HSPA, Lambton and Merewether. The girls team made it through to the finals, even though we only had six NHS players! I believe Jessica Wade’s talent was a huge advantage.

Year 8 students enjoyed a Multi Sports Gala day also held at Merewether High. We played several games of basketball, oz tag and futsal and finished the day with a mixed netball play off. We didn’t walk away the Champions, but a great day was had by the students involved.

Year 9 students were well-represented in a Mixed Netball Gala day, with 4 mixed netball teams entered and plenty of energetic subs. Sportsmanship was highly displayed and even though we didn’t win many games, the students were still smiling and not giving up.

A very special shout out to Lara White (Yr 10) and Makayla Swan (Yr 9) for their expert umpiring skills on the day.

All students who attended the gala days, represented Newcastle High School with pride, respect and responsibility. Thankyou Everyone!

Premiers Sporting Challenge – Multi-Sport Day NSW School Sport Unit - Disability Day

Many outstanding Year 10 students volunteered themselves to help run sporting sessions for the NSW School Sport Unit Multi-Sport Day held at Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium. All students did an amazing job assisting the coaches and running coaching sessions for students with disabilities. I would like to personally congratulate these fine young students on the way they represented Newcastle High School and upheld our core values with excellent leadership from you all – the following statement came through from the organiser:

“We would like to pass on our commendations and gratitude to the Newcastle High School student leaders who attended Newcastle Basketball Stadium today to support students who participated in our NSW School Sport Unit Multi-Sport Day. Despite the setback of a suburb-wide power outage that left areas of the stadium in semi-darkness, your students were only too willing to help our coaches and the students all day. They were enthusiastic and engaging, and their overall behaviour was exemplary. They are a credit to your school and are to be congratulated.” Brett Keeble.

School Sport 2021

Things are looking positive for Thursday Sport in 2021. We are endeavouring to offer bus sports again such as Ten Pin Bowling at Dullboy's Social Co Warners Bay, Rock Climbing at Pulse Adamstown, Highlite Fitness at Cooks Hill, Trampolining at Revolution and Ice Skating at Warners Bay; along with Ninja Park and Indoor Sports at Genesis Cooks Hill. Notes will be handed out in the first week of student attendance.

We understand this year has been a difficult year to engage students in Thursday Sport afternoon with very limited options available to us due to COVID-19 restrictions. Because of this, our attendance at school Sport has been disappointing and has caused some concerns with the Principal, Executive Team and Sport Coordinators. Our aim for 2021 is to reengage students with school Sport. Please ensure your child attends Sport afternoons by enabling them to select a sport that they enjoy and is suited to their likes and interests. We will continue to monitor absences during this time AND DON’T FORGET… All sport hours are mandatory and part of the Department Guidelines that students must satisfy.

Upcoming Dates:

Swimming Carnival – Lambton Pool – Monday 8 February 2021

Mrs Woolley  - Sport Coordinator
