Including: Driving and Parking Safely and Bikes, Skateboards and Scooters
Road Safety
The safety of our students while on the roads around our campuses is a major priority. All of the roads around our school are extremely busy with school and non-school related traffic. I have particular concerns about the Parkway Avenue exit point, which is extremely busy with heavy traffic at 3pm, including cars, buses, pick-ups, buses entering/exiting, students on foot, bikes, skateboards and scooters. I have asked for a traffic safety audit of this area and have been following up on the Council installation of the new proposed crossing; however, in the meantime, please be reminded about slowing down in school zones and parking signage around the school.
Students riding bikes have been directed to use the rear exit to reduce the bottle neck of bike traffic entering and exiting onto Parkway Avenue at the front gates, with the storage area being offered as the cricket nets enclosure, closer to this gateway. Parents and students on bikes are also reminded of the critical importance and legal requirement of wearing a helmet.
The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrains and drivers outside school. You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:
drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road
never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous
always take care in 40km school zones
follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible
park responsibily even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate
never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk
never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm
model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child
always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways
Bikes, Skateboards and Scooters
If students are bringing bikes, skateboards or scooters to school, please understand that they do so at their own risk of theft or damage. It is strongly recommended that students with these items bring a chain/lock to secure them, and be understanding that we are unable to ensure they are completely secured. Students from Week 5 will not be leaving these items all around the school, with them currently being left in all types of hazardous places, causing concerns for trips and falls.
If at school, all of these items with wheels will be in the same location, with storage offered in and around the cricket nets with bike racks being located here from Week 5. This is the temporary new enclosure for any personal device with wheels, until we establish the assets plans into 2021 for where these could be positioned to ensure the work health and safety of everyone on the site. In addition, students who leave the school on bikes must not leave from the Parkway Avenue gates, with the WHS Committee to review this plan in the coming weeks to prioritise traffic safety at this exit/entry point.
