Merry Christmas, Write it Right! and Re-Build Update
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our families within the Newcastle learning community. As Term 4 draws to an end, our Yearly Reports will soon be published on Sentral and we are celebrating the many, many achievements of our students and the school.
A reminder that the last day for students at school in 2023 is Friday 15 December. Students will return to school for Term 1 2024 on Thursday 1 February (Years 7, 11 & 12) and all Years on Friday 2 February. I thank our parents, carers and community for their support throughout 2023 and look forward to a productive and positive 2024 together. I wish you all a safe, enjoyable, and restful summer break.
Write it Right!
Our Write it Right! (WiR!) Year 8 program, celebrated a successful inaugural year on Thursday 30 November, with an assembly and community showcase. Our community partners attended to listen to the students reflect on what they have learned and the experiences they had, building relationships, cultural knowledge and skills.
The goal of WiR! Is to learn on-country, taking this learning out of the classroom to improve students’ academic writing, in a culturally safe way. Students visited the Murrook Cultural Centre on Worimi land 3 times per term all year, and then had follow up lessons within the fortnight, reflecting on what we learn on-country. The activities students engaged in and the cultural knowledge gained has ensured that our Write it Right! program is engaging, inspiring and rewarding for Year 8 Aboriginal students this year.
We look forward to welcoming our new Year 8 Class of 2024 students into the WiR! Program next year. Thanks to Port Waratah Coal Services for their support of this initiative at NHS.
Re-Build Update
To wrap up the term, we have welcomed the establishment of our new temporary classrooms, that will replace the teaching spaces and student toilets in B block. These new spaces are air conditioned and will be fitted out in the holidays with technology provisions and furniture. The playground areas will be adjusted at some point in Term 1, to allow the builders access to the site for commencing construction, once the final building approvals are given. We will be ensuring that student active areas are encouraged to continue our students engaging in active play and social games during breaks. We are getting very excited about the commencement of the transformation of Newcastle High School in the coming months, as the builder is announced shortly.
