Activate Inclusion Sports Day

The University of Newcastle hosted the Activate Inclusive Sports Day where students from primary and high school support classes could try their hand at a variety of modified sports. 35 excited NHS students (and staff) worked with coaches to perfect their technique in soccer, cricket, tennis and dance. Students not only gained valuable sporting tips and met other competitors, but some students were earmarked for additional sporting programs due to their skills and most students will be engaging in a Mascot Cricket Challenge in May.

A big thank you to the Support staff for assisting on the day and to the coaches and sponsors for allowing all of our students to participate and try new sports in a fun and safe environment.

Touch Football Opens

A group of talented and enthusiastic touch football players descended on Newcastle Touch Football Fields to compete in the City Zone Touch Football Competition. Students donned their new NHS kit and took to the field with fire in their bellies.

Our boys, although low in numbers, lined up and mixed it with the best, demonstrating tenacious attacking and defending skills. Kobi Lyle displayed outstanding skills play making with finesse in the centre, and led our boys as they rallied against some quick plays (without any subs) and constant fresh legs from the opposing teams. Super Sub Paula Miller jumped on board during the second game, and the team came away victors, boosting team morale. Ian Perez and Josiah Farthing were outstanding in support play, playing multiple positions and backing up when needed while Matt Campbell and Sam Taylor were faultless in defence, chasing down anyone who looked like scoring. The camaraderie between the boys and the other teams was exceptional and the team shows exceptional potential.

Our girls had a cracking team made up of a mix of older heads and younger legs and they were a team who instantly gelled. Sylvia Knott, Gabriella Nesbitt and Tori Fitzgerald successfully worked the ball up the middle of the field supported by Isabelle Farthing, Mia Bailey, Aura Atkinson, Mikayla Van Dal and Sunny Ward. The defensive line was kept strong with Ruby Crane, Matilda, Erin and Georgia making some impressive tags. As a team, the girls demonstrated lots of promise, getting stronger and stronger with each game and showcasing great attacking dexterity with Jade Archer, Annabelle Alford, Annika Sommer, and Ashley Ossington making breaks and helping to keep the team in the hunt for tries. Coming away with a mix of wins, draws and losses proved the girls have some super skills that will propel this team forward in future years.

Baker Shield Cricket

On the 8th of March the Newcastle High u/14 cricket side participated in the first two rounds of the Baker Shield CHS cricket competition where they played two T20 matches. To make it to the next round they were required to win both games.

In the first game we played Belmont High. Belmont won the toss and chose to bat first, setting a healthy total of 131. Newcastle High’s best bowlers were, Kade Bolton taking 3 for 12 off 4 overs, Max Reynolds taking 2 for 16 off 4 overs and Ashlie Stapleton taking 1 for 21 off 4 overs. Newcastle High took on the arduous task of chasing the healthy Belmont score. Unfortunately Newcastle could only amass 94 runs due to early wickets and tight Belmont bowling. Newcastle top scorers were Kade Bolton scoring 23 and Kurtis White scoring 26.

Newcastle and Kotara High schools competed in the consolation match of the day. Kotara won the toss and chose to bat and set a significant score of 118, with Luke Abblitt taking 2 for 7 off 2 overs and Max Reynolds taking 0 for 9 off 4 overs.  Newcastle then batted, getting off to a flying start to chase down the total in only 13 overs. Alek Frangos dominated the Kotara attack, scoring 55 not out. Max Bohlsen come out to bat in the 13th over and scored 2 fours to complete a Newcastle High victory.

Thanks to all the parents that attended to support the side, especially Damien Abblitt for scoring both of our matches.

Under 14’s Rugby League Gala Day - Buckley Shield

Tuesday 12th March 2019, Windale Oval

The boys’ first match was against Cardiff HS which proved to be a tough affair. Cardiff scored in the final seconds of the match to win 10-4. We started well and finished strongly but it was the middle period of the game that needed improvement if the boys were going to progress in this competition. Simple handling errors and some minor penalties put the Cardiff side on the front foot and gave them the confidence needed to stay with our dominant pack.

The second match was against Swansea HS, the favourites of Pool C after finishing in the top four in 2018 with the majority of their team a year younger than most of their opposition. The Newcastle boys got off to a slow start, making several handling errors and providing the opposition with plenty of field position. This resulted in two tries being scored on the left hand touch line after some silky hands from a well-trained backline. After the break our boys regrouped and took it to the Swansea Team, controlling field position for most of the half. We managed to cross the line once but the scrambling Swansea goal line defence was too strong, holding us out as the final siren sounded. Final score, 10-4.

After losing our second match, we needed a big win in order to qualify for the finals as the best second place winner of the pools. This was made possible considering that Mount View HS had not won a game all day and our boys were hungry for the finals. We dominated from the outset, scoring tries at will. It wasn’t until late in the second half when we made an error coming out of our own end, which was compounded by a lazy missed tackle, that we allowed Mount View a consolidation try in the corner. The final hooter sounded, NHS won 42-4.

Over the loud speaker it was announced that Newcastle HS had missed out on making the finals by two points on for and against. The boys were shattered that the soft try they let in against Mount View had cost them an opportunity at rugby league glory. Throughout the whole day the boys showed plenty of courage, determination and humility. They also represented themselves, their teacher and school in a mature and respectful manner. Thanks to all the players and parents for your support on the day, it was much appreciated.

3 points – Xander Clifford

2 Points – Jordan Wilson/Jack Cromarty

1 Point – Gus Ellis
