Canvas Support

CANVAS, our Online Learning Management System

Canvas is Newcastle High School's learning management system and provides a comprehensive eLearning environment and consistent online experience. Advantages include easy access to curriculum resources, assessment tasks and feedback. Students can participate in collaborative, engaging, multimedia-based learning experiences. All classes are accessible through your personalised Canvas dashboard.

To access Canvas, we recommend using the latest version of Google Chrome (Version 79 and 80). Alternatively, you can find out what other browsers Canvas supports here. Access Canvas through the appropriate buttons below. For assistance with gaining access to Canvas, please visit the school access page.

Canvas integrates seamlessly with the G Suite and Office 365 meaning students can store their work in the cloud and submit to Canvas. Canvas makes management of student learning requirements much easier, providing online personalised calendars, learning agendas and To Do lists.

Student Support Hub for Canvas

Students may seek support from their class teacher via the discussion posts or direct messaging within Canvas. Every student at Newcastle High School is also enrolled into the Student Hub for their respective grade. This is a point of access for all students to seek individual support for wellbeing, technology, assignments and any other assistance with school work.

Canvas Easy Guides

The Learning and Support team have made a number of support videos in the Student Hub called “Easy Guides”, including this tutorial video discussing first time navigation to the Learning Hub.

Logging in to Canvas

Once you navigate to Canvas Sign in with your school email address and password. Select NEXT to be redirected to the DoE login page. Enter your User ID and password.

Canvas Dashboard

Once you are logged in you will be taken to your Dashboard. Every dashboard looks different for every user as it customised to only show you the courses to which you are enrolled. Students will see only the courses for which they are enrolled. Parents will see all the courses for each of their children.

UPDATE YOUR NOTIFICATION PREFERENCES

Notification settings allow you to receive announcements, receive information about course deadlines, receive alerts when grades have been posted, and more. Update how frequently you would like to be notified and even choose to be notified by text message.

CHECK YOUR CANVAS CALENDAR

The calendar displays information for all of your enrolled courses. View by week, month or Agenda view.

Filter your calendar by clicking the colour box next to the calendar course name.

KNOW WHEN YOUR ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE AND READ THE TEACHER’S FEEDBACK

Assignments include quizzes, discussions, or online submissions. Stay informed of what is due by checking the To-Do List and the Coming Up feed in the sidebar of the dashboard, by viewing the calendar.

DOWLOAD THE CANVAS STUDENT APP

Never miss an Assignment or Class Announcement again!

Canvas Student App

The free Canvas Student App is available from both the App Store and Google Play. The Canvas Student app helps you to stay on top of your To-Do items. You can also view your Calendar, Notifications and messages.

The App will store your credentials, so once you log in, you will not have to do it again. Please note that while you can access most features of Canvas on the app, using Canvas on a computer is a lot easier!

Canvas Help Guides

If you would prefer written guides, these are available at Getting Started with Canvas as a Student. Additional support materials are also available on our website. Canvas has produced Getting Started with Canvas as a Student videos. All of these can be accessed online from the Canvas support pages:
