Assessment & Reporting
Find information here for strategies used to assess student learning, information about what to expect throughout the year regarding assessments and additional information about NAPLAN testing for students in Years 7 and 9.
Learning
Our teachers use a variety of strategies to assess student learning.
Teachers observe students' work in class and look closely at tasks throughout the year.
They also formally assess a student's achievement based on the outcomes described in the syllabus of the subject.
As a parent or carer, you’ll receive access via Sentral to your childs report twice a year. It gives you a clear picture of your child’s achievements – what they know and can do.
We use the common grade scale in Y7 to Y10 to report student progress. And we use the Preliminary grade scale in Y11 to report student progress.
Visit Handbooks and Resources for specific information about each year's assessments.
Our term Assessment Calendar is updated regularly to include any changes made to assessments due in the near future.
Assessments
We provide detailed information to students about what we expect from them throughout the year and how their work will be assessed. Students have a number of formal assessments throughout their schooling.
- NAPLAN: National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy. Reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy tests for students in Years 7 and 9. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) holds the tests in May each year. Results and student reports are released in August.
- VALID: Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development. Online diagnostic science assessments for students in Year 8. Some schools also choose to sit the tests in Year 10.
- RoSA: Record of School Achievement. RoSA is awarded to eligible students who leave school before completing their Higher School Certificate. The RoSA records a student’s grades between the end of Year 10 and when they leave school.
- HSC: Higher School Certificate. This is an internationally recognised qualification awarded to students who successfully complete Years 11 and 12 in NSW.
- Some students may apply for placement in a selective high school, for more visit Selective High Schools.
NAPLAN Testing
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
NAPLAN assess skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against standards for all Australian children.
All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom.
An individual student NAPLAN report is issued by the school. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child's results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available on the National Assessment Program website.
