Human Society and its Environment

In Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in history and geography. They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects. A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students research, gather and analyse information, question and make judgements, write for a variety of purposes.

Courses

STAGE 4: Y7 & Y8

  • Y7 follows NESA endorsed Stage 4 History and Geography syllabuses that are focused on building a strong foundation in skills and knowledge about ancient societies and about the world they live in.  The subjects are divided into 2 terms of History and 2 terms of Geography in mixed ability classes. 
  • Y8 continues with the Stage 4 History and Geography building upon year 7 course by exploring the medieval time period and understanding the importance of water in our world, as well as global interconnections.        

STAGE 5: Y9 & Y10

  • Y9 & Y10 students follow the Stage 5 History and Geography syllabus which continues to introduce more complex skills and content. Students explore complex human and geographical interactions that have shaped our history and physical world. In addition, students are able to choose from a range of elective courses such as Aboriginal Studies, Commerce and Elective History which provide enquiry based activities and a deeper understanding of HSIE subjects leading into stage 6.

STAGE 6: Y11 & Y12

  • Y11 and Y12 students are able to choose from Ancient History, Modern History, Geography, Legal Studies, Business Studies, and Society and Culture.
