Principal's Report

Relieving Principal - Quinn Robertson

Welcome Back, School Development Day, ANZAC Day 2021, Parent Forum & Student Sporting Success

Welcome back to Term 2, which has already proven to be a busy and exciting start.

Janene Rosser is taking leave this term to complete her PhD studies and we wish her all the best for this time consuming and rigorous process. As such I would like to introduce myself. I am Quinn Robertson and I am excited to be the relieving Principal this term. I have worked at Newcastle High School for nine years and have taken on various roles in the school during this time.

For the last five years, I have been the Deputy Principal based at Newcastle High School's - Cooks Hill Campus. Cooks Hill Campus is a site catering for students in Years 9-12 who wish to pursue passion and project-based learning. The learning at Cooks Hill is deeply personalised with strong connections to experts in students' chosen specialities. We have a strong connection to the University of Newcastle and Big Picture Australia. Without an HSC or ATAR, our site uses portfolio entry to university and has had students enter university into; Bachelor of Law, Bachelor of Business, Psychology, Bachelor of Teaching, Bachelor of Global Indigenous Studies, International Business Studies and Bachelor of Creative Industries. Cooks Hill Campus will be presenting at the upcoming Parent Forum on Monday 10 May should you wish to learn more, or our campus website is:

School Development Day - Michael McQueen

To start Term 2, teachers engaged with Michael McQueen’s three hour presentation, “Teaching for Tomorrow”. Through Michael’s engaging and motivational presentation, staff were challenged to think of ways to develop students’ skills and capabilities, along with content knowledge and deep understanding. Staff have since had a second professional learning opportunity to discuss and reflect on what they learnt and refine ways to put their new found ideas into practice. ANZAC Day 2021

Newcastle High School held an ANZAC Day service on Wednesday 21 April. We commemorated all those who serve and have served in the Australian armed forces. In particular, we paid respect to all those who gave their life or were injured in the service of their country. We sincerely thank all the students who ran and participated in the assembly and the entire school for being so respectful during the service. Lastly, we greatly thank members of the Australian Armed Forces Re-Enactment Heritage Unit for their catafalque presence at the service. Lest We Forget.

Our school leaders, Sunny, Evelyn, Tenzin and Charles represented our school proudly at the Long Tan Retirement Village ANZAC Day ceremony on Friday 23 April.

Upcoming Event: Parent Forum

Monday 10 May.

Parent and community voice is an invaluable asset and has helped guide the direction of our wonderful school for many years. The strong connections between school and home facilitate positive educational outcomes for students. During 2020 we moved to Zoom meetings but I am pleased to announce we will be back face to face! Whether you are a new face to Newcastle High School or someone who has had students at the school for a while, we would love you to join us.

Between 5:00 - 5:30 pm a BBQ will be provided by the school. With the forum scheduled from 5:30 -7:00 pm.

To save the date and check agenda, view the event link here.

Student Sporting Success

Over the past two weeks, we have had students gain places in Combined High Schools sporting teams and individual events. The PDHPE department will endeavour to acknowledge all those over the next few weeks at school, but to name just a few we have had representation and success at: Hunter AFL, Hunter Opens Boys Rugby, Hunter Opens Boys Rugby League, Hunter Football (Soccer) and CHS Swimming Championships. As a school we are very proud of the way our young athletes have shown dedication to their sporting endeavours! Well Done!.
