A highlight of learning in Room 5. Below are the opportunities in the community, for the students to develop and extend their classroom learning in Life Skills programs.
Sailing commenced in Term 1, with a volunteer collecting the class from school in the Belmont 16’s Courtesy Bus. Thank you Belmont 16’s! After quickly changing students are out sailing on Lake Macquarie with a volunteer sailor, with a peer like Lawrence or solo sailor like Acasia. After lunch, supplied by Sailability, the class walks to Belmont then returns on a public bus. This is a great program and students are anxiously waiting for an opportunity to return to sailing once the restrictions are lifted.
Westfield Kotara is the destination for our shopping program where students make purchases for home before lunch in the food court. Students make choices of items required for the cooking program too. There are opportunities for comparison shopping comparing prices, quantity and quality of items.
Rag making Upcycle Newcastle supplied the class with enough rag balls and tee shirts to make bowls and a rug in school colours for the classroom floor. The process is a form of finger crocheting and it was great to see how students persevered. They are all projects in progress. It will be great to see the finished projects. Thank you Upcycle Newcastle for your support in supplying the materials and instruction.
Cooking in Room 5 enables students to confidently prepare and cook snacks and meals and more importantly, encourages students to try new foods. The class is looking at convenience foods that are easy to make. Some of the snacks and meals cooked this year have been savoury pizzas, crumpets, pancakes and students have also learned how to reheat sausages and compare jelly flavours.
Upcycling across the classes occurs on Thursday afternoons and students have completed a number of projects from painting rocks for a rock drop, making dream catchers from old DVDs and CDs, and the rag finger crocheting to make a personal bowl.
Field Trips commenced the end of Term 2 with a quick walk to Centennial Park collecting dry autumn leaves along the way. On returning to school everyone had the opportunity to decorate leaves in a variety of mandala designs.
