High Potential & Gifted Education
At Newcastle High School, we acknowledge that students demonstrate learning progress and achievement at varying rates and in diverse ways. Some students exhibit advanced potential or performance in domains such as intellectual inquiry, creative expression, socio-emotional leadership, or physical endeavour.
Our commitment is to recognise and cultivate these capacities through evidence-based identification practices, differentiated pedagogy, and opportunities for enrichment and extension. We aim to provide intellectually rigorous and engaging learning environments that promote challenge, curiosity, and sustained growth.
This approach aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education Policy, ensuring that all students are supported to realise their potential and achieve excellence across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical domains of development.

What is High Ootential & Gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our HPGHE opportunities

Our HPGE policy defines four domains of potential, each representing broad categories of natural ability education.nsw.gov.au. Students may exhibit high potential in one or more domains.
