Credential & Pathways

The central focus of learning at CHC is students working towards the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC). Through individualised Personal Interest Projects, students investigate topics connected to their passions and future pathways.

Academic rigour is developed by analysing and reflecting on their work through the Big Picture Learning Frames: Empirical Reasoning, Communication, Quantitative Reasoning, Social Reasoning, Knowing How to Learn, and Personal Qualities.

By applying these lenses to their projects, students demonstrate deep understanding, critical thinking, and real-world application of their learning, building a portfolio of evidence that showcases both their academic achievement and their readiness for future study, work and life beyond school.

International Big Picture Learning Credential

At the end of studies in Year 12, all students at Cooks Hill Campus receive the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC). This credential is an alternative pathway that recognises the depth, rigour and authenticity of learning undertaken through the Big Picture model.

Rather than relying solely on traditional examinations, the IBPLC assesses students through a comprehensive body of evidence that demonstrates their learning, capabilities and readiness for life beyond school.

Students build this credential over time through their projects, learning portfolio, exhibitions of learning, internship experiences and pathway investigations.

Their work is assessed against the Big Picture Learning Goals: Communication, Empirical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Social Reasoning, Knowing How to Learn, and Personal Qualities.

These goals ensure that students demonstrate not only academic knowledge, but also the ability to apply that knowledge in complex, real-world contexts.

As part of the IBPLC, students compile a graduating portfolio that showcases their strongest work, their research and project development, and their pathway planning. This portfolio provides universities and other post-school destinations with a rich and detailed picture of the student as a learner, including their interests, skills, work ethic and future goals.

Cooks Hill Campus has a strong track record of supporting students to pursue their chosen pathways. Students who wish to go to university have successfully done so through the IBPLC pathway, supported by a national network of 17 partner universities that recognise the credential as a valid entry pathway.

To further strengthen university readiness, students may also undertake additional learning opportunities such as:

  • TAFE Certificate II and Certificate III courses, which provide industry-recognised qualifications
  • Open Foundations courses at the University of Newcastle, allowing students to experience university-level study while still at school
  • community-based learning and internship experiences deepen knowledge of their chosen field

These opportunities help students build both the academic capability and the confidence required for further study.

Through the IBPLC, students graduate with far more than a set of exam results. They leave with a portfolio of meaningful work, real-world experiences and a clear pathway forward, whether that pathway leads to university, further training, entrepreneurship or employment.
