Learning in Advisory
A central feature of learning at Cooks Hill Campus is the Advisory structure. Each student belongs to a small Advisory group of 17 students from Year 9 to Year 12, led by one main Advisor. Students have their own learning space within this Advisory, creating a strong sense of belonging and continuity. Advisors work closely with students and their families over their educational journey, building deep relationships based on our core values of Trust, Respect and Care.
Because of this structure, Advisors come to know each student and their family very well and play a key role in supporting both their learning and personal development. An Advisor is more than a classroom teacher.
They are an integral part of an environment that allows students the freedom to discover who they are as learners and individuals, supported by the guidance and motivation of inspiring adults.
Advisors create a safe, trusting and collaborative learning environment that enables students to learn through both school and community experiences. They support students to develop as unique, mature, capable and responsible individuals, and guide each student through their learning journey and their successful transition beyond school.
Each day in Advisory begins with a check-in activity. These activities are an important part of building community and connection within the group.
Check-ins provide an opportunity for students to share ideas, reflect, discuss current events, or engage in collaborative thinking activities that strengthen relationships and support wellbeing.
Following check-in, students plan their work for the day based on the learning plan they have developed for the term.
Advisors then work the room, engaging with students through one-on-one conversations, feedback and coaching. This personalised support allows Advisors to extend students’ thinking, challenge them academically, and guide the progress of their project work.
