Present day Newcastle High School evolved from four schools; the original Newcastle High School on The Hill, Newcastle Girls’ High School, Newcastle Boys’ High School and Hunter Girls’ High School. The graduates of all four schools have made huge contributions to our local community, our state and our nation. Here are some prominent alumni from 2000 to 2025 you may recognise. Olivia Higgins
1992 . NHS 2020-2026
Olivia is a professional rugby league player in the NRL Women's Premiership. She was born in Newcastle and started playing league tag. She has played for the Aberglasslyn Ants, CRL Newcastle, Central Coast Roosters and Sydney Roosters; winning the 2021 Grand Final over St. George Dragons. She joined the Newcastle Knights in 2022 and won the 2022 and 2023 grand finals beating the Parramatta Eels and then the Gold Coast Titans. Archie Goodwin
2004 . NHS 2017-2022
Archie is a professional soccer player with Charlotte FC in the USA MLS. He began playing at 5yo with Cooks Hill United, then the U9 Newcastle Jets NPL team. He debuted with the senior Newcastle Jets at 16 in 2021, the club's youngest debutant and their youngest goalscorer. Plagued by injuries for the next two years he signed for Adelaide United in 2024 winning the Golden Boot that year with 13 goals, the youngest ever. Angie Bainbridge
1989 . NHS 2001-2006 . OAM
Angie swam in freestyle events, especially the womens 200m distance and relay competitions. She won gold in the 4×200m freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Games and silver in the same event at the 2012 London Games. She also won silver at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in the 4×200 m freestyle relay and has medalled at multiple short course events. Prue Watt
1987 . NHS 2000-2005 . OAM
Prue was an Australian Paralympic Swimmer. Her vision was damaged at birth, but that did not stop her swimming passion which started in surf life saving. Her greatest success was winning Gold in 100m breaststroke at the 2012 London Olympics. She also won 6 Silver and 4 Bronze medals across the London and Athens games and 2002 and 2006 World Championships. In 2013–2014 she trained with the Australian Paralympic Alpine Skiing Team. Ryan Rowland-Smith
1983 . NHS 1995-2000
Ryan is an Australian former professional baseball pitcher and current television broadcaster for the Seattle Mariners. He debuted in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Mariners in 2007 until 2010. He briefly pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014 and represented Australia in the 2004 Summer Olympics and three World Baseball Classic tournaments. Then played for minor league teams, joined the EDA Rhinos in Chinese Pro League, the Brisbane Bandits of the Australian Baseball League in 2017, then retired after the 2017 World Baseball Classic > learn more
